Friends and youth ministry colleagues:

This is a reminder that the first Coalition meeting of 2009 is this Monday, Feb. 9 @ 7pm at The Kings College (Empire State Building, Lower Level, Classroom 2). Please make every effort to attend.

2008 was a year of transition for the Coalition, as the 20/20 Vision for Schools initiative matured farther and faster than any of us could have anticipated, with more than 150 churches expressing interest in adopting schools, and other cities looking to 20/20 as a model for similar movements in their regions. The momentum surrounding 20/20 has highlighted a number of organizational challenges that the Coalition must resolve in order to sustain the movement. Your insight and wisdom is required to help resolve those issues and discern next steps for 2009.

Because of the strategic importance of this meeting, Jeremy Del Rio will be facilitate it as a consultant, and we are specifically requesting your participation as well.

A light meal and beverages will be served.

Thank you for your consideration. Please rsvp by email to confirm your attendance.

In Service,

Edwin and Walter
Co-Chairs

Coalition member Don Dore of Rock the Sound emailed an emergency prayer request Sunday night. Please join us in praying for his brother who broke his neck yesterday after a freak accident at what should have been a joyous occasion for his family.

… [My nephew] Josiah … was asked to throw out the first pitch at the Red Sox Saturday afternoon game. … After [he] threw the pitch, the family stayed to watch a game. It was very hot there, and my brother Dan fainted from heat exaustion / sun stroke… or something. He’s the tallest of my brothers (and they are pretty tall), and when he fell, he went down hard and hit his head. His neck broke in 2 places. They rushed him to a hospital in Boston (I’m shaken so I forgot to ask which one) and they operated on him early this morning, and inserted some metal pits, etc, and worked to piece the bones together again. They say it will take 3 months recovery time, and obviously aren’t saying when he can be expected to return home yet. …

Please join with me in prayer that my brother Dan (age 52) recovers miraculously, and his family is protected and that any insurance, etc… will be able to carry them through in this time of need. If you can please forward this to others that would help an join in these prayers, I would greatly appreciate it.

A night for all pastors, church deacons and elders, youth ministers, educators, community leaders, and congregants still uncertain about 20/20 Vision for Schools or not sure what to do next in adopting a local school. Come hear Rev. Dr. Tony Evans of the Urban Alternative, a nationally recognized faith leader and President of the National Church Adopt-a-School Initiative, share why public schools are the cutting edge of ministry in our city.

Pastors must RSVP by email for the 5 pm gathering.

The 7 pm gathering is open to all.

The Coalition’s own Fernando Arzola, Jr. — Deputy Chair of the Department of Youth Ministry and Christian Education at Nyack College — published Toward a Prophetic Youth Ministry: Theory and Praxis in Urban Context this month with InterVarsity Press. Much love for the shout-out in the acknowledgment section!

Heed the advice of Bart Campolo from the book’s jacket cover: “Pay attention to Fernando Arzola,” and buy the book today.

2020 Vision for Schools (Postcard Front)

2020 Vision for Schools is a new campaign of the Coalition of Urban Youth Workers to transform public education in New York City within a single generation of students.  For generations, NYC has failed to deliver on its promise to children that if they stay in school, they will be equipped with the skills they need to succeed in life.  First graders in September 2008 are the high school graduating class of 2020.  Churches and youth ministries around the city are declaring that this generation will be the first one for whom we make good on our promises.

We launched a website at www.2020Schools.net to promote the campaign and provide resources to equip churches to adopt schools effectively.  The basic concept is explained at the about page, as well as in a YouTube video you’ll see posted on the home page.  The Resource page offers links to a variety of supporting materials, including articles, audio downloads, powerpoint presentations, case studies and more.  The website is very much an evolving organism, with new content and funtionality being added regularly.

We’ll be discussing next steps and how-to’s at the next Coalition meeting (Monday, February 11, 7-9 pm at the King’s College, Empire State Building, LL Classroom 2).  Please rsvp by email if you will be joining us this month.
